What happened to letters…just a short note once in awhile! That’s what my 93 year old mother says as she walks back from her empty mailbox most days. That’s reality for some people….but for me, I’m loving social networking, text messaging, skype-ing, etc. There are so many possibilities…there is so much to learn!
But along with all that great connectivity….there is the dilemna that many students cannot spell or write a simple thank you note because they write like they text…who needs all those extra letters anyway? Employers continue to stress the need for strong communication skills…and that means writing and speaking as well as virtual communication skills.
The answer for those of us in Career Development is to welcome opportunities to learn about many of these new resources. We have found that tools like Skype, Webinars, and Twitter can help us access our customers more effectively, save time and travel for traditional meetings, and enhance productivity. Don’t let the technology unknowns keep you from exploring options that would benefit you and your programs. At the same time, don’t get so consumed with being connected that you don’t leave the computer long enough to actually write or call your mother!

I AM in technology overload, but this article didn’t really help. Sorry.
I use a lot of technology to help me stay organized and informed.
You have to fight the urge to always have the latest and greatest, because there is no way we can ever keep up with advancements.
We should have more that mind set of I am not going to be always the first, but neither am I going to be the last.
I do review the product, feature and users reviews before investing in a new technology or product upgrade.
Most well thought out technologies will last you several years without upgrades.
I love technology. It really helps with organization in keeping up with schdules and such. I am not overloaded. I am just in the overload. The problem that I have with technology is that the software does not last that long. And you have to keep updating to increase needed space.
Technology is helping in bigs ways across the board because of research that can be done on just about anyhting that you need to know. I love it for many reasons. :):)
I love technology but I do think it is relied on too much. If the lights go out usually most companies would have to hault operations because nothing can be done manually. I also worry about a generation of people who can’t even do math without some type of electronic help. I am a true believer in a back-up plan and being able to do things the old fashion way is not a bad thing. Just ask the passengers on that plan that landed on the Hudson. I am sure they appreciated that their Captain could land the plan with or without technology.
Technology is a good thing but we have to keep in mind that we must remember the basics of how to communicate without all the wonderful gadgets that we have. After all these gadgets may not be around forever.
