I notice that our young people seem to expect us to give them jobs with all the perks their parents have “earned”……ie….$60k and plus jobs with car and all the travel paid for etc….

What they seem to have a real problem understanding is that you have to “work” and do a good job to get these perks….How can we help them understand that OTJ and working hard every day gets you what their parents have today?

I agree with your observations, Cheryl. However, I sincerely believe that young people — for the most part — learn by practicing what they observe.

The truth is, we live in a society that pretty much cries out for “immediate gratification.” If we want something now, we “buy it on time.” Very few of us buy things we can actually afford at the point of purchase.

So, when young people see that their parents can go into a store and buy something without any money simply by handing the clerk a plastic card, they begin to look for the “plastic cards” in their own lives too. But, as you so well pointed out, there is no plastic card for success. Success is earned day-by-day, and even moment-by-moment.

Great observation! Excellent point too. There are few things we can do in life that are more important than teaching the next generation “the right way.” Let’s all start by modeling the right way as we live our lives out before them!

    Blessings!
